I am drawn to the decor we have chosen for our home. I suppose it’s the unfussy, undemanding, yet homely-and-heartwarming rustic farmhouse style that, if anything, provides a wintertime shelter from the storm and feels cozy, warm, and inviting during a season when we so often huddle indoors behind closed doors.

I love the natural elements that make up our decor, which is certainly not replete with the “more is more” excess that is just around the corner and down the rabbit hole of online Pinterest boards. Our decor is not minimal, but it is simple, and its simplicity is part of what gives it quiet charm and makes it feel stable and sturdy enough to be a part of this season’s backdrop.

The 21 Best farmhouse christmas decorations

1. Rustic Wooden Ornaments

1. Rustic Wooden Ornaments

I adore the appeal of rustic farmhouse decorations, particularly the wooden ornaments that make their appearance during the Christmas season. While I don’t have a complete woodworking shop at my disposal, I do have an ornamentary set of tools and the know-how to use them.

2. Burlap Christmas Stockings

2. Burlap Christmas Stockings

3. Silver Tree Skirt

3. Galvanized Metal Tree Skirt

Envision a delightfully quaint supplement to your Christmas tree, a rustic and relaxed piece that could only be found in a farmhouse.

4. Plaid Throw Blankets

4. Plaid Throw Blankets

Farmhouse Christmas decor is all about charming simplicity, and that’s just what these throw blankets exude. Their checkered patterns and rich colors bring forth the spirit of the season, and their super-soft fabrics invite friends and family to snuggle up for movie marathons or book readings.

To achieve that unfussy-but-festive look integral to the cozy farmhouse style, pair this plaid beauty with a simple neutral-hued (maybe even knitted) throw pillow on your couch.

If you’re looking for more “life up your arm” coziness, drape this blanket over an armchair and let it be your companion after the sun goes down.

5. Vintage Santa Figurines

5. Vintage Santa Figurines

Santa figurines exhibit an old-time charm that works wonderfully for Christmas decor in a farmhouse. Many of these figures have been crafted from ceramic or wood and, unlike some other types of Christmas decor, seem to relish in their own cozy, yet sophisticated, vintage vibe.

They often depict a Christmas Santa with a jolly, rosy-cheeked face, a big, flowing white beard, Mrs. Claus, with a legion of Christmas elves, in what seems to be a crazy, yet highly organized, workshop up in the North Pole.

6. Wooden Advent Calendar

6. Wooden Advent Calendar

There is something especially beguiling about a wooden advent calendar.

But where the wooden advent calendar counts down the days until Christmas, using for each day either a small door or drawer to conceal a treat or some sort of message, by no means does that render it at all simple. The calendar can have more than one artistic style, even on its facade, and it can also have a pride of place in any number of settings, for instance, on a mantel, in a kitchen, or on a side table.

7. Cotton Ball Garland

7. Cotton Ball Garland

This delightful farmhouse garland is as soft as it is simple. Each cotton ball strung along this garland looks like a snowball, and I can’t think of a cozier decoration for winter.

Making it could not be easier. You will, however, need a fair number of cotton balls, so either purchase them in bulk or make some yourself.

8. Reclaimed Wood Signs

8. Reclaimed Wood Signs

Wood that has been reclaimed adds a rustic feel to Christmas decorations in a farmhouse style.

The “story” of each particular piece lends itself well to conversation and communal gatherings common to the Christmas season. The first piece is chosen—clean, dry, and ready to accept paint or a stencil.

After thorough drying, a light sanding ensures that the paint sticks.

9. Mason Jar Candle Holders

9. Mason Jar Candle Holders

Mason jars are an elegant way to turn your Christmas decor farmhouse-style. A warm rustic touch enhances any setting.

Fill a mason jar with faux snow or Epsom salt and seal for the coziest candle holder you can imagine. Light a tea light or LED candle, and see how a burlap ribbon around the rim ups your candle-holding game.

Pine cones resting on the jar add height and drama—not to mention quality rustic vibes. Cuz you know, it’s not really a farmhouse Christmas until there are some serious pine cones involved.

10. Twine Wrapped Wreaths

10. Twine Wrapped Wreaths

A plain wreath frame becomes something special when it is wrapped with jute twine.

I longed for that coziness, that handcrafted quality that one admires in so many things in the farmhouse decor style. I wanted that look and feel in the wreath on my front door this year.

The wreath frame ends up being not much more than a simple twig wreath. What really puts it over the edge as a decoration is the combination of the twine, the jute is so nice, with the pine sprigs, and small pine cones.

11. Farmhouse Table Centerpiece

11. Farmhouse Table Centerpiece

Christmas is the time when I most enjoy designing a farmhouse table centerpiece. Envision a rustic wooden tray big enough to hold all the goods.

That holds my pinecones and my cinnamon sticks. And my sprigs of evergreen: real or faux, I’ll use either.

And whilst peering into the centerpiece, you might see a small ornament swinging from a sprig of evergreen that’s hidden (not really) from view. Your eyes will also cumulate a glance at some rustic red berries snugging alongside the aforementioned elements.

I mean, THAT is what I see when I see my Christmas farmhouse table centerpiece!

12. Distressed Wooden Stars

12. Distressed Wooden Stars

These simple but effective wooden stars add holiday cheer while maintaining a familiar farmhouse appearance. The contrast of the rustic wood with our modern decor makes these stars an artful choice.

They possess enough gravitas to be a focal point but also enough simplicity that they won’t clash with anything else in your living room.

13. Gingham Ribbon Accents

13. Gingham Ribbon Accents

The accents of gingham ribbon bestow a mixture of charming and rustic that adds festive farmhouse decor to Christmas. Their checkered pattern—so often seen in red and white or green and white—coordinates perfectly with the woefully cozy and homey vibe of the holiday season.

One of the ways I use this gingham for Christmas is to wrap gifts, in the (very) simple bow that finishes each package. I also like to tuck gingham into garlands and wreaths.

And for a unique touch, I tied small lengths of it around tree branches.

14. Antique Sled Decor

14. Antique Sled Decor

Adding antiquated sled decor to holiday settings lends an ambiance of rustic charm. I find that these vintage sleds, the kinds you might come across in flea markets or attics, are just the thing for my Christmas decorating if I’m aiming for a cozy farmhouse feel.

15. Barnwood Picture Frames

15. Barnwood Picture Frames

Picture frames made from barn wood can bring a delightful rustic touch to your holiday decor. Reclaimed wood from old barns can be found to use for such a project, giving each frame that weathered appearance that’s oh-so-charming and full of character.

To make one, you’d measure out to fit a standard-sized photo, then cut the wood to match. While some may argue that you lose the magic upon sanding the edges, it’s necessary to ensure safe handling.

Assemble the pieces together with wood glue or small nails, then hang the frame up or give it to a loved one as a gift.

16. Quilted Tree Skirt

16. Quilted Tree Skirt

A tree skirt made of quilted cloth encircles the base of a Christmas tree with intricate patterns and a soft texture and really finishes off the look.

17. Jute Rope Bows

17. Jute Rope Bows

The rustic appeal of jute rope bows enlivens and adds a farmhouse flair to any Christmas decor. Though I rarely venture into the realms of simple farmhouse crafts, jute rope bows are gorgeously simple and easy to make.

With a natural hue and coarse texture, jute seems like it was made to be a part of farmhouse Christmas decorations. I used jute rope, not twine, because I wanted the thickness to balance the teacup and saucer used as a base for the garland above.

Still, one could easily use twine instead of rope, and the bow would still retain its rough-around-the-edges charm.

18. Patchwork Table Runner

18. Patchwork Table Runner

Illuminate your Christmas farmhouse decor with a delightful patchwork table runner. This creation merges cheerful squares of fabric in a cozy and festive design.

It is a striking mixture of plaid, lungwort, and pine prints in a series of lovely color combinations: muted reds and greens, light and dark shades of gold, and a surprising light turquoise. To construct your own, choose and cut your fabric squares.

Do not worry if they are not perfect. Remember: patchwork is supposed to have character!

Arrange them in an order that makes you happy; then sew them together. Either hand-stitch or machine-stitch your way through 3 layers of joined fabric: the front patchwork piece, the batting, and the backing fabric that makes it beautiful and adds some heft.

Finally, bind your edges.

19. Wool Felt Ornaments

19. Wool Felt Ornaments

There is something very cozy and charming about using wool felt to make Christmas ornaments. The textured wool felt carries a warm look and feel especially when crafting simple shapes that you might find in a country Christmas, such as stars or hearts or Christmas trees.

I think they fit especially well with the farmhouse style that so many people have now, which evokes both simplicity and a bit of nostalgia, and you can’t get much simpler than cutting and sewing a few ornament shapes from a piece of festive wool felt.

20. Lantern String Lights

20. Lantern String Lights

You can create a cozy atmosphere for the Christmas celebration by using string lights in the shape of tiny lanterns. The look is reminiscent of that rustic farmhouse aesthetic that has suddenly become so trendy.

And guess what? Each tiny lantern is an LED lightbulb, so there’s nothing flammable about these portable lights!

If you want to make your own, all you need is a metal lantern, a fairy light, and a hot glue gun.

21. Iron Bell Garlands

21. Iron Bell Garlands

Bring the holiday charm of an old-fashioned farmhouse to your home with these Iron Bell Garlands. Made from sturdy metal with a rustic finish, the bells themselves are about 4 inches high.

They are linked together in a way that produces a soft, sweet jingle. And—for a festive touch—stitch some evergreen sprigs along the garland between the bells (the same way you might use the evergreen as a base for a wreath) and/or hang a few with a length of red ribbon.

Draped over a mantel or staircase railing, these bells have an enchanting appeal, and what’s more, they’re deceptively easy to make.
