Thanksgiving is not only a meal. It’s an opportunity to host friends and family – a memorable afternoon or evening.

It’s an easy passage to the ‘warm glow’ of human connection, and something I’m always considering when I plan our table. While I’m keen to make it a bit traditional, I also want to make it a bit new and different.

I want each element to be conducive to joyful and warm conversation: the linens and the pieces of china and the  arrangement… So come with me as I offer a series of ideas for your table. When chill starts to bite and leaves blaze their glorious shades, I delight in the harvest. Fall’s tables groan with seasonal bounty – fields once stripped of summer bounty turned up squashes and pods, apples and roots, each with its own flavor and lore.

It’s the season when farmers’ markets and farm stands are teeming with goodies and picking pumpkins and wandering a corn maze become weekend rituals. 

10. Woodland Warmth

I love walking through the woods in the colder months. 

An earthy smell swirls around me, the smell of fallen leaves and pine needles that wrap me in its warm embrace. 

Every step the twigs underfoot crackle out a harmony matched by the distant tweet of a songbird. This place seems like an escape from the noise of the world, one that that opens us up to reflection and a life that moves at a slower pace.

11. Traditional Warmth

There is something seductive about the familiarity of adhering to the old ways, it’s an embrace of the traditions, practices, and dances that are shared and bequeathed. Fall is a time when you can catch me under the allure of cinnamon and cloves, candles, and woven wool blankets.

 It is an embrace of the familiar, marked by the way that it comes to anchor me in a world that feels different from one day to the next, but that’s assuredly the same if I come back to the roots.

When the sun dips down over the sea lapping a distant shore, I walk along the shoreline where time slows down. Waves splash in the salt water and sandy beaches.

A place for calm and contemplation. Marine life and birds and clouds that kiss the water.

A place as far away from the world as possible. Walk along the cliffs or just look at the tides, this is a place for your soul.

13. Bohemian Vibe

I am forever drawn to the bohemian vibe – an aesthetic of creativity and nonconformity; a way of embracing the free-spirited energy of those who are open minded and not afraid to push the boundaries. 

It is a state of living creatively that transcends styles and mediums; it is an all-embracing way of life. When evoking the bohemian lifestyle, here are some of the reflections I have in mind.

The bohemian aesthetic is offering us a modest antidote to monotony, encouraging us to be bold, openminded and culturally informed. Each element tells a story and, because of this, the boho life truly is less ordinary.

14. Eclectic Fusion

Pairing the unusual with the traditional, the familiar with the exotic, and the mundane with the mesmerizing is something that I truly enjoy imagining. This eclectic adventure towards unusual combinations is another synonym for embracing stylistic, cultural and conceptual juxtapositions.

This kind of approach has a transformative energy that awes me – how seemingly incompatible pieces could suddenly work together, and tell a new, exciting story.

15. Candlelit Ambiance

I love when all the lights are low, and candlelight helps me create a more intimate and serene atmosphere. It’s wonderful: ordinary hallways suddenly take on a tranquil feeling, and I can feel the flickering flames dance softly, casting shadows on the walls, which creates a bond and helps me to be more present.

Here, my chats are deeper, my dinners quieter, my books more interesting. The room seems to whisper of the past and tales of nostalgia, but it also warmly whispers of peace and tranquility in the present.

Colors scream loud and proud. Stepping into a room filled with loud or bright colors, there is an instant rush of excitement and creativity.

The colors are all shouting their own stories, fighting for attention but working together harmoniously. Whether it’s neon’s electric zing or the sunset’s unabashed warmth, these colors fill spaces with energy and inspiration.

Bold, bright themes are an incredible way to be audacious, bring life to even the ordinary, and add personality and pizzazz to any moment.

There is something about the reduction of colour to pure black and white that makes the simplest of images incredibly alluring; the clarity and economy of monochrome contrasts and texture is seductive. Look at all the shades of black, white and subtle grey – even the darkest shadow has its own story to tell.
